Bois Du Matin

I grew up on a farm. This is the morning I keep going back to.

Early, before anyone else is up. Dew still chewing the grass. Looking out across the paddock to where the forest starts, breath hanging in the cold.

You pull on your favourite jeans, no top, no plan and walk out, bare feet on warm timber floors. The whole day still ahead of you. Nothing decided yet.

That's Bois du Matin. Every bottle is me trying to get back there.

Two woods hold this fragrance up. One from home. One from the other side of the world.

The first grows twenty minutes from nowhere in Western Australia. Sandalwood is one of the slowest payoffs in perfumery: a tree that takes decades to build its scent, because the oil doesn't live in the branches. It lives in the heartwood, the dense core at the centre of the trunk, deepening year over year like rings of patience. Ours comes from Australian grown Santalum spicatum, drier and softer than its famous Indian cousin. Less incense, more skin. It's the warmth at the base of this fragrance, the timber floor underfoot.

The second comes from the other side of the world. Canadian Cedarwood, cut from the cold: dry, clean, quietly assured. If sandalwood is the floorboards, cedar is the treeline, the forest you look out at across the paddock, holding its shape in the morning air.

One wood from home. One from away. The whole fragrance lives between them, the way the memory does: bare feet on warm timber, eyes on the forest.

Some things can't be rushed, faked, or made anywhere else.

That's why they're in the bottle.
